ree

A man has been arrested and a dog seized – after another dog was fatally injured in South Tyneside.

At around 10.30pm on Tuesday, October 28, police received a report that a dog had injured another dog on Boldon Lane in South Shields.

It was understood a man, aged in his 80s, had been out walking his Cockapoo near to the car park of Tyne Dock Metro Station.

They were then approached by another dog which knocked him to the ground, before his dog sadly sustained fatal injuries.

The other dog, which was believed to be a bull-type breed, left the area in the company of a man before police arrived.

An investigation was launched by the Force's Criminal Investigation Department with support from colleagues in the Dog Section.

Today (Thursday), officers have arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control. He remains in police custody at this time.

A dog was also seized in connection with the report to ensure the safety of the public.

Detective Sergeant Alan Whittle, of Northumbria Police, said: "This was a tragic incident, where a man has sadly lost his family pet and sustained minor injuries.

"We completely recognise the concern of the wider community, and a man has since been arrested as part of our fast-track enquiries.

"A dog, believed to be a bull-type breed, has also been seized and will now be assessed by specially trained colleagues.

"We'd like to thank the public for their support in sharing information and would now ask everyone to refrain from speculation which could be harmful to our investigation.

"If you do think you can assist us, especially if you saw what happened or have any footage, then please come forward."
